The Calgary Police Commission (The Commission) is a statutory body created under the Alberta Police Act that oversees the Calgary Police Service in order to ensure efficient and effective policing for the City of Calgary. The Commission is accountable to the Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security and operates in accordance with the Calgary Police Commission bylaw, set by the City of Calgary.

The Commission acts as a link between the community and the Service with a mandate to balance the requirements of public accountability with those of police independence, and to provide an interface between the Calgary Police Service, elected officials and other agencies.

Reporting to the Calgary Police Commission (CPC) Board,



the Executive Director is a multifaceted role that provides expert advice to assist the Commission in carrying out its mandate. Your duties will include providing management and oversight for The Commission office, while having a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a professional and highly confidential team environment. Primary duties include:

- Provide leadership and direction for The Commission office and staff. This includes maintaining efficiency and effectiveness, budgeting, hiring and supervising, overseeing performance measures, workload, employee engagement, coaching and mentoring, and human resources functions (for example: performance development, employee issues, etc.)
- Advise The Commission on governance matters and provide historical context, procedural and policy information to support The Commission in carrying out its duties. Advise on external expert resources as needed.
- Lead the coordination of regular Commission reports and meetings, ensure agendas and minutes are prepared and distributed in a timely fashion.




- Facilitate annual activities such as onboarding and training of Commissioners, conduct of elections if needed, and any other tasks related to the smooth functioning of the CPC.
- Support onboarding of new Commission Board members, ensuring they are engaged and have access to the information they need.
- Develop collaborative relationships with key partners including City and Provincial staff both elected and administrative.
- Work closely with The Commission and Calgary Police Service (CPS) to ensure that the right information arrives at The Commission board table and that the work is streamlined for CPS and for The Commission.
- Arrange meetings and get agendas approved for intergovernmental meeting or consultations on behalf of The Commission.
- Partner with The Commission Board to assess and address the strategic and operational issues,



opportunities and decisions that regularly arise.
- Gather information as appropriate from interested parties to inform The Commission on significant issues, timing of reports, etc.

Qualifications

- A degree in a related field, such as law, criminal justice, public administration, political science, etc. combined with at least 5 years of progressive experience in an oversight and governance role.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- A solid understanding of issues regarding Board governance, and knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and processes and how it impacts the work of The Commission is preferred.
- Experience managing budgets and providing leadership in policy development and execution is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability in building, developing, and inspiring teams,



deploying resources to achieve effective and efficient outcomes, adapting to changing priorities, and managing and resourcing initiatives.
- Skilled at communicating strategically with and across a broad range of individuals and key partners.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with and establish and maintain strong and positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and/or other partners.
- Strong political acumen, and a proven ability to think and act strategically, recognize and analyze opportunities and issues of concern, and recommend effective solutions.
