WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Transmission Line Design Engineer (Electrical) to join our National Electrical Team, located in Ontario - ideally in Thornhill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto, Kitchener or Ottawa.

This position will play a crucial role in the design and optimization of transmission lines, overhead and underground, related to but not limited to hydroelectric facilities, high voltage transmission, substations, and distribution facilities. This role involves close collaboration with clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise and consulting experience, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

What you can expect to do here:

1. You will provide transmission line design and engineering consulting services to major power and energy utility clients, independent power producers, and energy project developers;
2. You will design electrical transmission facilities including line layout, foundations,



structure configuration, structures, insulation and conductor specification;
3. You will work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering team to design transmission lines rated at 34.5 kV to 735 kV;
4. You will develop electrical calculations for conductor sizing, EMF reports, corona, foundation design, and others as needed;
5. You will design and prepare grounding drawings according to national and utility standards;
6. You will analyze underground transmission lines including ampacity calculations, cable crossings, selection of accessories and components;
7. You will prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation;
8. You will deliver thorough substation dead ends and transmission line designs that meet industry standards;
9.



You will review internal and external designs for code compliance and constructability;
10. You will resolve site queries, attend site meetings, and perform site inspections during the construction phase;
11. You will maintain complete project documentation regarding transmission line design and construction;
12. You will coordinate design activities with multi-disciplined project team members;
13. You will maintain good working relationships with internal groups, material suppliers, contractors, and others;
14. You will collect, compile, and analyze data relating to transmission line components and specifications;
15. You will support project teams with research and recommendations on design requirements;
16. You will verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues;
17. You will prepare data and visualizations for interpretation or presentation of findings;




18. You will maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and reporting;
19. You will contribute to technical reports and presentations to address design and engineering issues;
20. You will conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on design problems;
21. You will work collaboratively with other engineers and disciplines on projects;
22. You will exercise responsible decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct;
23. You will perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution;
2. Professional engineering license (P.Eng) required;
3.



Minimum of 4+ years of relevant post-education experience in an electrical engineering capacity designing transmission lines;
4. Experience with all voltages 735 kV and below, OPGW, and fiber;
5. Working knowledge of PLSCADD, PLS-Pole, SPIDAcalc, SES-CDEGS, WinIGS, EMTP-RV, and PSCAD;
6. Exposure to operations and project controls experience;
7. Knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices;
8. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management;
9. Experience in electrical studies related to grounding systems, lightning protection, and EMFs;
10. Ability to coordinate with agency regulators;
11. Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws and regulations;
12. Proficiency with technical writing and discipline-specific design software.
