The Opportunity: This role leads the Sustainability and Technical Programs team for BGO Properties across Canada, with a focus on advancing building-specific sustainability and technical programs, projects, and initiatives. The position also serves as the primary liaison between BGO’s internal teams, external clients, and regional property management professionals. A strong background in property management is essential, along with expertise in carbon emissions reduction, GRESB, and sustainability strategies.
What you will do:
- Act as the primary liaison between BGO Properties and corporate Sustainable Investing and Property Management teams to optimize the use of BGO’s sustainability data platform for monitoring asset-level utility performance.
- Develop and oversee strategies to enhance utility data coverage at the asset level to achieve client decarbonization goals and GRESB performance targets.
- Manage technical building assessments (e.g., decarbonization audits, energy/water/waste studies, and retro-commissioning) by coordinating with third-party consultants and internal teams. Provide actionable insights and implementation plans based on findings.
- Identify and execute scalable capital improvement projects that focus on building efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, such as HVAC retrofits, rooftop solar installations, building automation systems, and geothermal technologies.
- Monitor regional regulations and incentives related to energy efficiency and carbon reduction, ensuring compliance and identifying opportunities for funding or credits.
- Lead pilot initiatives for emerging sustainability technologies and strategies to maintain BGO’s position as an industry leader.
Program Management:
- Oversee the execution of key sustainability programs, including BGO’s Benchmarking Program, tenant engagement initiatives, energy and carbon reduction projects, and waste reduction strategies.
- Manage green building certification programs for Canadian operating assets, including BOMA BEST, LEED, Fitwel, and Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification.
- Advance client climate risk objectives by promoting progress toward Net Zero Transition Plans and climate resilience.
- Update or develop BGO’s sustainability tools, programs, and best practices to align with evolving standards and organizational goals.
- Manage the sustainability budget in collaboration with property/portfolio teams, ensuring seamless integration into annual property budgets.
- Lead efforts to secure regional recognition through award programs like the Certificate of Excellence, Building of the Year (TOBY), and Race2Reduce.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Provide guidance on sustainability strategies, technologies, and regulatory trends to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Manage and deliver the National Sustainability Training Program, ensuring consistent development of skills and knowledge among property management teams.
- Foster a culture of sustainability across all teams by encouraging participation in relevant initiatives and providing support as needed.
Who You Are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum 7-10 years in property management or building sciences,
engineering, energy/sustainability management, with demonstrated expertise in sustainability programs, GRESB reporting, and carbon emissions reduction. A postgraduate degree or relevant professional certification is considered an asset (e.g. P.Eng).
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of building systems, energy management, and carbon reduction technologies.
- Proven ability to manage large-scale programs and projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills to inspire cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with Canadian regulatory frameworks, green building certifications, and incentive programs (e.g. CAGBC, BOMA Canada), ENERGY STAR etc.
- Advanced knowledge of certifications in sustainability or technical services (e.g., LEED AP, WELL AP, or equivalent) are an asset.
- Technical Proficiency:
Experience with sustainability data platforms, building automation systems, and performance monitoring tools.
- Police Clearance: A criminal verification check is required for employment.
