About North York Women's Shelter:

The North York Women's Shelter ("NYWS") actively supports the rights of women, trans, and non-binary individuals and their children as they build lives free from violence by providing safe shelter, advocacy, and a range of trauma-informed programs and services including 24-hour crisis support. Our vision is to create a community characterized by gender equality where women, trans and non-binary individuals and their children feel empowered and safe.

About the role:

The Supervisor, Programs and Services reports to the Manager,



Programs & Services and plays an important role in enabling the efficient and effective delivery of programs and services for NYWS clients and their children through supervision for client-facing positions, back up support to the Manager, Programs and Services, on-call rotation support, and other tasks supporting the day-to-day operations of the Programs and Services function.

- Contract Duration: This is a full-time 1-year contract position starting February 3, 2025 with the possibility of renewal.
- Work Location: This is a fully onsite position based out of the North York Women's Shelter.
- Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, 12PM - 8PM with occasional weekends and overnights.

What you will be doing:

General Responsibilities

- Fostering and maintaining an inclusive, respectful, trauma-informed and non-violent environment within the Shelter for colleagues and residents while adhering to NYWS policies and procedures.
- Providing day-to-day support for the Programs and Services department, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and efficiency of operations in alignment with NYWS' mission, vision, and values for clients and staff.
- Fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion by considering diverse cultures, physical abilities,



and lived experiences of our internal and external community in the delivery of services.
- Upholding confidentiality of all clients and staff in accordance with organizational policies.
- Supporting the implementation and awareness of NYWS policies and procedures among frontline staff including with respect to Health and Safety, Privacy and Confidentiality, and Conflict Management, and others.

Supervision Responsibilities:

- Supervising client-facing staff to ensure that NYWS programs and services are delivered in accordance with organizational policies and shelter best practices.
- Developing and managing staffing schedules in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and guidance from the Manager, Programs and Services,



using appropriate tools such as email and ShiftLink to communicate with staff with respect to scheduling.
- Providing oversight for shift changes, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and documentation.
- Providing supervision for frontline staff to facilitate continuous performance improvement and self-reflective practice.
- Collaborating with the Programs and Services leadership to coordinate training and development for Programs and Services staff e.g., CPR & First Aid Training.
- Supporting the Programs and Services Manager with the review of timesheets for payroll to ensure accurate reporting of time worked among Programs and Services staff.
- Supporting the onboarding and training of new Programs and Services staff, instilling NYWS values and principles of trauma-informed practice.

Programs & Service Delivery

- Providing back up support for the Programs and Services Manager as needed.




- Attending on-call duties as assigned, providing after-hours support to Shelter staff and reporting serious and unusual occurrences to the Manager, Programs and Services.
- Supporting Advocates in managing crisis de-escalation, conflict resolution, and client complaints.
- Providing support in the delivery of programs and services as required.
- Ensuring incidents are reported correctly and accurately, and that reports are shared with the Programs and Services Manager as well as Executive Director.
- Providing oversight to support the effective and efficient coordination of resident intake and departure processes.
- Facilitating intake assessments to assess service eligibility.
- Conducting weekly room checks and monthly building inspections as required by Health and Safety guidelines.
- Overseeing room preparation and readiness after each intake.




- Partnering with Primary Advocates to welcome and orient new residents to the Shelter, sharing key resources such as the Welcome booklet, Client's Rights and Responsibilities, Chores, and Shelter Guidelines.
- Reviewing weekly housing updates and recommending options as needed, working in partnership with the Resource Worker, Transitional Support Worker and others.
- Regularly updating the communications binder, occupancy list, resident reference binder, welcome booklet, and other resources for Programs and Services staff and NYWS residents.
- Maintaining the resident chore list to ensure safety and cleanliness of the Shelter.
- Monitoring the crisis call log to ensure that the binder is up to date and address concerns arising from crisis calls.
- Ensuring accurate and comprehensive recording, collection,



and maintenance of client information via digital (WISH Database) and hard copy files.
- Supporting with the coordination and facilitation of key meetings with staff and residents such as case management, bi-weekly Resident Meetings, quarterly Relief Staff meetings, etc.

Other Responsibilities

- Providing regular updates to the Programs and Services leadership regarding Health and Safety, staff and client concerns, and others to facilitate continuous improvement of service delivery.
- Supporting Programs and Services leadership with the implementation of program evaluation initiatives.
- Collaborating with Programs and Services leadership to set departmental goals and prioritize initiatives based on organizational and client needs.
- Supporting the development of reporting and documentation for compliance and operational planning purposes.




- Attending and participating in additional team building, training, in-services, and community outreach projects as required.
- Additional duties as assigned.

Who you are:

Your Education & Experience

- You have completed post-secondary education in a related field such as Social Work or Social Service Work, Gender and Women Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Justice, Assaulted Women's and Children’s Program, or have obtained the equivalent education or experience.
- You have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Shelter or similar environment.
- You have experience and/or training in trauma-informed care, mental health, harm reduction, and substance use management.
- You have knowledge of Violence Against Women Emergency Shelter Standards.




- You have prior experience leading teams in a unionized environment.
- You have or will be willing to obtain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) with future checks.
- You have or are willing to obtain CPR Level C and First Aid Training.

Your Skills and Competencies

- You are proficient with Microsoft Office tools e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- You have excellent verbal and written communications skills and ability to adapt communication to respond to a wide variety of stakeholders and audiences.
- You have strong work ethic, and organizational, project management as well as time management skills to prioritize effectively to complete deliverables on time.
- You are able to work effectively independently as well as part of a team.
- You are able to work under pressure and in crisis situations.
- You are experienced in crisis support and conflict mediation using non-violent communication strategies.
- You are comfortable working in a pet-friendly environment.
- You’re committed to understanding and working from an intersectional feminist, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive lens.
- You are able to work outside of routine work hours including evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations.
