The Role
The Finance Manager is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the firm, playing a key role in driving financial stability, growth, and operational efficiency. Reporting directly to the Vice President, Finance, Technology, & Facilities, the Finance Manager will collaborate closely with the management team and support staff to develop and manage budgets, analyze financial performance, and provide strategic insights to support sound decision-making. Additionally, the Finance Manager will lead efforts to optimize financial processes, ensure regulatory compliance, and support firm-wide initiatives for growth and profitability.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the financial forecasting process, annual budgeting, and monthly budget update process (including variance analysis, profitability analysis, and cash flow analysis).
- Develop annual budgets, monitor expenditures, and obtain necessary input data for decision-making.
- Identify improvement and automation opportunities to streamline finance processes.
- Set business policies and practices according to firm objectives.
- Provide counsel to the management team for sound strategic decision-making.
- Provide day-to-day leadership and management guidance which mirror the firm’s mission and core values.
Required Skills
- Financial Expertise
- A minimum of 5 years of finance or accounting experience in a professional services environment.
- Experience working in a law firm is an asset; experience working with a professional services organization is a must.
- Proven financial accounting and management experience with the ability to solve real-world business problems with creative, critical thinking.
- Demonstrated excellence in fiscal management of budgets, financial reporting, and daily accounting functions with a solid knowledge and understanding of accounting software.
- Advanced MS Excel skills with the ability to model complex financial situations and make accurate financial predictions and decisions.
- Communication
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex analysis in a variety of ways including proposal planning, writing, and presentations.
- Experience effectively communicating across all levels of an organization, including with senior leadership.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities with attention to detail and careful planning.
- Business Understanding
- Extensive business operations knowledge with the ability to proactively identify, analyze, recommend, and implement solutions for the overall effectiveness of the firm in a manner consistent with its culture of a commitment to social justice.
- Strong decision-making skills to consider options, anticipate outcomes,
and make choices that positively impact the firm.
- Ability to develop, layout, and follow through on detailed business plans and programs.
- Leadership & Teamwork
- Strong leadership ability with sound strategic, analytical, communication, and reporting skills and an ability to work with everyone in a supportive collaborative manner.
- Confident and positive self-starter with a solution-oriented mindset, strong personal productivity and time management skills, and the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Exercises ownership of assigned responsibilities, including making fully developed recommendations and owning results.
Other Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in finance, accounting, or business administration.
- Minimum 5 years of experience of relevant experience in an accounting or finance role
- Has or working towards CPA
