Area Maintenance Manager
The Area Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing a reliable and cost-effective fleet of vehicles and multiple facilities across Alberta, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. This role requires a strong background in strategic planned and preventative maintenance within the Transportation Industry. The successful candidate will manage workforce and budget requirements, set departmental objectives, and develop strategic plans to meet operational goals. Additionally, the Area Maintenance Manager must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills, fostering a positive and inclusive team environment while leading and mentoring staff.
Technical expertise as a Certified Heavy Equipment Technician is vital, along with strong organizational abilities to plan and execute maintenance tasks efficiently. A focus on safety, adherence to DTL Health & Safety practices, and alignment with the company’s core values are critical for success in this position. The ideal candidate will be dependable, reliable, and consistently maintain a positive attitude towards colleagues and company goals.
Work Shift: Monday to Friday, travel is required 25%.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coaching and holding the Maintenance leadership team accountable for efficiency.
- Achieving financial objectives by preparing and adhering to an annual maintenance budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.
- Developing strategic plans that align with company goals and strengthen internal and external relationships.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure all employees adhere to company policies and procedures; communicate new Safety Bulletins; lead Toolbox meetings and participate in monthly Safety Inspections.
Stay vigilant about Health & Safety concerns and ensure staff work safely, reporting any issues. Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and that shop leaders meet their monthly small group safety meeting targets. Oversee daily toolbox meetings and ensure compliance with Environmental regulations, including proper fluid inventory management and the safe disposal of used fluids and containers.
- Ensure all equipment complies with Provincial Highway Regulations and that the fleet is available daily to meet service needs. Implement an efficient Preventative Maintenance schedule to minimize downtime, maintain regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement while identifying current and future maintenance needs.
- Maintain the highest housekeeping standards in the shops, ensuring all faults are promptly reported and addressed.
Uphold strict engineering hygiene standards, ensuring all tools are serviceable, operated according to manufacturer recommendations, and in compliance with OH&S; regulations.
- Human Resources: Approve all staff training, participate in the hiring process, and manage staffing needs, vacation, and leave schedules. Oversee New Hire Orientation for all new employees, track progress, and monitor probation periods. Evaluate technician performance, conduct performance appraisals, and address disciplinary issues with support from Human Resources when needed.
- Plan and implement an efficient shop schedule, assigning tasks to staff as needed. Ensure the necessary parts are available for upcoming service projects and collaborate with procurement to adjust inventory levels based on the fleet's seasonal requirements.
- Facility and Fiscal related:
Review and close all work orders (WO’s) over $5000; ensure timely completion of PMs, recalls, and campaigns; analyze equipment cost history and LTD costs. Monitor the vehicle "down" list, taking accountability for vehicle availability, and collaborate with the team to improve it. Coordinate external repairs with local vendors and track associated costs.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all DTL employees, including Senior Management, Business Partners, and team members. Regularly monitor emails, track KPIs, and attend weekly meetings, including the Maintenance meeting. Ensure that WFA is updated daily to accurately reflect equipment status. Provide weekly reports on the status of overdue CVIPs, PMs, and units on the down list.
- Perform any other duties that are deemed reasonable by the VP.
Qualifications & Skills Required:
- Comprehensive technical knowledge of proper mechanical procedures, methods, tools, and techniques necessary with regards to maintaining our diverse fleet.
- Thorough knowledge of maintenance prevention, repair requirements as well as computerized vehicle maintenance programs and project management systems.
- Excellent planning, budgeting and human resource management skills.
- Successful responsibility of and management of multiple maintenance facilities and the ability to create new maintenance infrastructure.
- Maintain a clear criminal record, a minimum of a Class 5 driver’s license with air brake endorsement, and a clean driver’s abstract. Class 1 or 2 would be an asset.
- Possess proficient computer skills in MS Office Suite. Able to create and deliver presentation in Power Point.
- Proven ability to strategically plan, including financial forecasting,
analyzing, recognizing, reporting, and implementing solutions.
- Exceptional communicator via all communication mediums with proven competency with oral, written, conflict resolution, presentation, negotiating skills.
- Must have strong leadership skills including delegating, mentoring, and promoting teamwork.
- Must have strong organizational skills including time management, project planning, multitasking in a frenetic work environment including managing a high volume of daily emails, phone calls, and meetings.
- Travel is required, as this role oversees multiple locations.
Years of Experience:
- Minimum six (6) to ten (10) years management and leadership experience within the Transportation industry, specifically within a fleet maintenance environment
Education Requirements:
- Degree in business management or similar,
and a specialization in transportation or vehicle maintenance and/or equivalent experience would be an asset. Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician or Journeyperson Automotive Technician with previous focus in Heavy Equipment on road vehicle parts.
