If so, then we encourage you to apply for the Root for Trees Program Coordinator position with the City of Edmonton's Parks and Roads Services! As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting and enhancing the Root for Trees program, which increases our urban forest through volunteer tree-planting initiatives.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Root for Trees program which focuses on environmental education for diverse audiences. This includes program management,



leadership and supervision of staff, and program communications and promotions. This role requires strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, in addition to a passion for environmental sustainability and community engagement. The successful candidate will have experience in program coordination, staff & volunteer management, and event planning, along with a solid understanding of horticulture and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Management

- Oversee and direct daily operations of the program
- Proactively integrate safety and environmental sustainability practices into all program operations
- Develop and deliver tree-planting programs and events
- Oversee program documentation and data management
- Purchase and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
- Provide support to the Root for Trees Program Lead, including policy review, program evaluation, and event planning.

Leadership and Supervision

- Recruit, hire, and develop new staff through comprehensive training and coaching programs




- Provide supervision of staff who are leading volunteer planting event
- Efficiently manage staff time and attendance, and review time-off requests
- Evaluations of seasonal program staff to maintain high-quality program content

Volunteer Management

- Coordinate and direct volunteer recruitment, training, and overall management
- Communicate with and support volunteers to maintain service-level demands
- Create, schedule, and coordinate volunteer bookings online through the volunteer database
- Ensure volunteers are acknowledged and appreciated
- Record and track volunteer statistics.

Promotions and Communications

- Work with the communications team to maintain the Root for Trees webpage, create newsletters, and develop social media content
- Work with Respond to inquiries and notifications (via email and phone), and document public concerns




- Conduct outreach to internal and external stakeholders, to raise program awareness and develop collaborative partnerships

Qualifications

- A degree or diploma in environmental studies, horticulture, education, or a related field
- Minimum of one year of experience in program development and delivery
- Minimum of one year of volunteer management and/or directly supervising staff
- Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification

Assets:

- Experience with volunteer database (Better Impact, Volunteer Mark)
- Experience with GIS mapping
- Experience in plant identification and horticulture practices
- Understanding of Edmonton's local ecosystems, including our native flora and fauna
- Experience using social media for program promotion and community engagement
- Experience driving a truck and trailer

Conditions of Employment:

- Must be physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift program material up to 50 lbs.
- Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends, with weekend availability being essential from May to October.




- Must be willing to travel to various program sites throughout the city.
- Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position.

Work Environment:

- The work environment for this position is a combination of office work and outdoor fieldwork. The successful candidate will be required to work in various weather conditions and on rugged terrain.
