The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,990) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for the position of Aquatic Coordinator on a temporary full-time basis for approximately 6 months or until the return of the incumbent.

Reporting to the Manager of Recreation,



the Aquatic Coordinator will be able to identify and assess community needs and interests in development, implementation and administration of community services programs. The successful candidate will plan, develop, implement, coordinate, evaluate and administer one or more segments of a recreation program; plan, assign, supervise, provide leadership and schedule the work of the Recreation Programmer-Aquatics, Coordinating Guards and Lifeguard/Instructors. Independence of judgement and action is exercised in the performance of assigned duties, within the limits of established policies and procedures. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Qualifications

1. Degree in recreation or related field plus 2 years' experience, including supervisory experience in the recreation field or other applicable areas of study; or diploma in recreation and 3-5 years' experience in recreation administration and programming including supervisory experience, or recognized equivalent of education and experience.
2. National Lifeguard Pool and National Lifeguard Water Park Certificate,



Swim for Life Instructor Certificate, Lifesaving Certificate, Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C"/AED.
3. Swim for Life Trainer Certificate or National Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Certificate and National Lifeguard Instructor.
4. Pool Operator Level 2.
5. Pool Safe.
6. Applicants must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information/Vulnerable Sector Check.
7. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
8. The following certifications would be considered an asset:
1. Aquatic Safety Inspector
2. SEE (Supervision, Evaluation and Enhancement) Auditor

Preference will be given to applications with BCRPA High-Five Quest 100 - Essential Child Development and Fundamental Movement Skills certifications.

Required Skills

1.



Considerable knowledge of programming requirements and standards of leadership and teaching methods and techniques.
2. Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives and the means to develop and coordinate recreation and community services programs, activities, services and events with a specific emphasis on assigned program areas.
3. Sound knowledge of the needs and interests of the assigned target groups and the methods of determining those needs.
4. Sound knowledge of community resources related to the assigned program areas such as government agencies, private corporations and institutions, not-for-profit organizations and other groups.
5. Sound knowledge (theory and practical application) of supervisory methods, techniques and procedures.
6. Working knowledge of policies, bylaws and regulations and the policies and procedures of recreation facilities.





Required Abilities

1. Ability to exercise initiative and judgement and to work independently in the planning, development, coordination, implementation and evaluation of programs and events.
2. Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of staff, volunteers and contractual instructors and to assist in hiring and training.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of external and internal contacts and to develop community interest and involvement in programs offered.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with a diverse group of individuals.
5. Ability to monitor revenues and expenditures and conduct programs, services and events within budget allocations and make recommendations relating to the budget for defined area.
6.



Ability to maintain control of activities within a facility and to enforce rules with diplomacy.
7. Strong ability to analyze and assess pool operational processes and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies and improvements.

The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.

This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website.

Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities.



This position has responsibility for vulnerable persons and will therefore be required to undergo a Vulnerable Sector screening check, in addition to a Police Information Check, if an offer of employment is made.
