Description

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Senior Research Associate works closely with the Principal Investigator to develop and implement the strategic vision and research design of the research project(s). This person oversees the performance of all studies, including data collection, methodology development, analysis and knowledge translation. This person will participate in project development, obtaining grants, report/manuscript preparation,



and program administration as required. This individual will also provide technical support for other members of the research team.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Communication and Scientific Contribution

- Along with the Principal Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision and research design of the research project(s), which includes identifying and helping to secure funding opportunities
- Act as a primary liaison between research team and national/international collaborators
- Represent research team at national and international meetings, conferences, and seminars
- Study design and analysis of health data (of various types) of young cancer patients
- Draft publication plans using complex health data (i.e., administrative, quantitative, and qualitative)
- Draft research grant proposals using complex health data
- Support the preparation of research manuscripts to be submitted for publication and/or presentation, on the analysis of complex health data
- Conduct background research such as searches,



critical appraisal and summary of literature, as needed to support projects

Judgment and Decision Making

- Prepare and submit research projects for ethics approval
- Develop and implement research plans and analysis procedures based on overall research goals
- Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from conception through to final deliverables and project closure
- Responsible for quality control and reproducibility of findings
- Observe, record and interpret results
- Advise regarding potential initiatives in their field of expertise
- Participate in the design and development of processes and procedures
- Responsible for developing operating procedures, making recommendations and implementing change to methods, procedures, and practices

Leadership and Research Management





- Prepare project management plans and oversee the execution of the project according to timelines
- Provide leadership and guidance to students, trainees, research assistants/associates and coordinators within the project team
- Support others on the research team as required and provide input on future research by drafting proposals, manuscripts, grant applications, and writing ethics protocols
- Support the progress of the research team by providing analytical support for complex health data (administrative, quantitative, and qualitative), mentoring students and writing grants
- Draft and develop research proposals, data analysis, knowledge translation and project specific tasks/deliverables

Qualifications / Requirements:





- PhD in health-related discipline with 3 years of additional work/postdoc experience OR Master's degree in health-related field with at least 7 years of additional work experience
- Advanced knowledge of epidemiology
- Extensive knowledge of obtaining, managing, and analyzing quantitative health data
- Experience using large, complex administrative health data sets, electronic medical health records and linkages with prospectively collected data will be considered a strong asset
- Extensive knowledge in the design and conduct of qualitative research studies, including extensive experience in the conduct of interview/focus groups and analysis of qualitative data using NVivo
- Experience conducting systematic reviews and synthesizing relevant literature, including meta-analysis
- Skilled in academic scientific writing
- History of published papers in scientific, peer reviewed journals
- Previous experience in writing successful peer-reviewed grants or scholarships




- Previous experience coordinating grant competitions
- Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders, including experience in preparing presentations to multiple stakeholder groups
- Effective multi-tasking skills with project management skills preferred
- Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented
