Purpose:
The Health and Safety Specialist, Remediation will report into both the Director of Operations and the Practice Lead of the Remediation, Environmental, and Health & Safety Team. The successful candidate will work towards leading many of the internal Health & Safety initiatives for the Firm and assist with the growth of the Remediation Team’s Health & Safety practice. This work will include data reduction and evaluation, training coordination, hazard assessments, participation as worker Co-Chair in Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, hazardous materials and indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments, property examinations, peer review support, , and the preparation of technical reports at the highest standards of technical writing
Role responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Lead health & safety training including the ongoing continuous improvement and updating of training programs and materials
- Take a leadership role in the JHSC
- Support site attendance hazard assessments and risk mitigation activities in collaboration with experts across the firm
- Prepare virtual health and safety boards for Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and other jurisdictions as needed.
- Compare and contrast Roles and Responsibilities across jurisdictions, and integrate into OHS program.
- Work in a collaborative environment, both on your team and across disciplines
- Test operation and confirm calibration of systems and equipment
- Perform site examinations, document review and effectively communicate investigation and analysis findings to colleagues and clients
- Establish your presence in the marketplace through regular publication, in-person client meetings and participation in professional communities
- Interpretation of analytical laboratory results
- Move towards independence in client interactions and file-based analysis
- Begin to manage projects in an efficient manner and develop an understanding of billing and reporting requirements and/or client-based master service agreements (MSAs)
- Manage client service deadlines, budgeting, invoicing and accounts receivable on projects according to organizational best practices
- Prepare technical reports based upon sound investigations and analysis
- Work towards becoming technically independent (i.e., final sign off) in applicable aspects of environmental site assessment, designated substances abatement and remediation practices
- Develop a market understanding and begin to contribute to marketing events, moving towards independent marketing presence
- Be prepared to provide expert testimony in court
Expectations:
- Spend approximately 35% of your time working on client files
- Spend approximately 45% of your time on internal health & safety activities
- Spend approximately 20% of your time on professional development activities
Requirements:
- Graduate with Occupational Health and Safety Degree or Diploma · Candidate for future certification as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or Certified Engineering Technician (CET)
- Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and asset
- Experience in field and construction-site settings, including proper use of personal protective equipment and compliance with health & safety requirements in Ontario
- A strong foundation in the application of engineering or science principles and the scientific method problem solving, including indoor environmental and hazardous materials assessments
- Working understanding of indoor air quality and hazardous material regulations in Ontario ·
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
- Willingness to travel throughout Canada and occasional work in evenings and weekends as part of an emergency-response team
- Experience in the review, interpretation and real-world application of the Occupational Health & Safety Act in Ontario and Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations more generally
- Second language an asset
