Reporting to the Transitional Housing supervisor, the Addiction Support Worker is part of an interdisciplinary team and works to provide a broad range of services to clients who use substances, goal setting, psychosocial interventions, advocacy, referrals, discharge, and after-care planning. You would be responsible for engaging clients in facilitating access to services/ resources in support of client goals. The Addiction Support Worker collaborates closely with a variety of internal and external stakeholders in support of client, program, and organizational goals.
This is a full-time position that works between the hours of 1:00pm-9:00pm, Monday to Friday

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Engaging clients from a strength-based approach and embodying the principles of the YW Calgary Practice Framework
- Assessing client needs and partnering with the client to develop a person-centered service plan including identifying appropriate services/resources including referrals and advocacy.
- Approaching all crisis situations and interactions with sensitivity and cultural awareness, recognizing and accounting for the different barriers and considerations based on client’s backgrounds and identities.
- Working with a regulated staff member, the Addiction Support Worker collaborates with clients to develop safety plans that address their immediate safety needs, strategies for staying safe while in the program, providing information on and identifying potential risks.
- Coordinating referrals with Mental Health, Community engagement and Housing teams, as applicable
- Conducting psychoeducational workshops and support groups to enhance participant’s coping skills, promote self-care, and provide psychoeducation on topics such as addictions, trauma, domestic violence, mental health, and healthy relationships.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of participant interactions, assessments, case notes, and any relevant information in accordance with shelter policies and legal requirements.
- Regularly review program protocols, procedures, and processes with supervisor to ensure compliance and to update to reflect evolving needs and sets quarterly program goals in consultation with supervisor.
- Ensures proper allocation of program resources, supplies and materials to maximize service delivery.
- Proactively completes core training as per program and organizational requirements.
- Comes prepared to actively participate in supervision meetings designed to monitor performance, exchange feedback, and promote growth and development.
- Actively participates in team meetings, planning events, direction setting and monitoring and evaluation activities.
- Takes a proactive role in identifying their own learning and development needs through reflective practice and seeking out regular feedback.
- Stays updated on evidence-based practices related to the program i.e., addictions, domestic violence, homelessness, mental health, health and wellness, and feminist practice and shares this knowledge with the team.
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships and contributes to a culture of learning, equity, diversity,
inclusion and psychological safety.
- Maintains high standards of ethical work and demonstrates good judgment, respect, and professionalism in all interactions with employees, students, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrates alignment with organizational culture and speaks effectively to YW’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan when asked.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
- Bachelor’s degree in addictions, social work, psychology, or equivalent human services with 2+ years of experience working in a harm reduction setting.
- Professional registration or designation is an asset.
- Experience implementing recovery programs is a strong asset.
- Experience working with a diverse population including individuals facing oppression, violence, and various other intersecting barriers, particularly in a crisis setting, is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge of issues specific to women experiencing homelessness including poverty, trauma, domestic violence, addictions, and mental health is required.
- Conflict management, de-escalation, and resolution skills.
- Certification in First Aid/CPR, Alberta Brain Story, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Naloxone is required.
- Certification in Mental Health First Aid, Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training, Gender-based Violence are considered an asset or must be completed within 3 months of employment.
- Experience working with a diverse clientele, including multi-cultural, newcomers to Canada and other equity-seeking groups is an asset.
- Proficiency in using MS Office suite and other computer-based systems is required.
