The City's Seniors Services and Long-Term Care Division supports Toronto seniors and residents in long-term care homes to have the healthiest, most fulfilling lives possible through exceptional care and services. Vulnerable individuals who reside in the community are supported through adult day programs, supportive housing services, tenancy support and homemakers and nurses services. Major Responsibilities
This Recreation Services Assistant position will be working a specialized Behavioural Services Unit (BSU) in the Senor Services and Long-Term Care Division
- Plans, implements and conducts activation, recreation and social programs i.e. discussion groups, fun and fitness, activities of daily living or special events.
- Explains,



demonstrates and assists participants in performing activities.
- Attends team meetings, presenting alterations/adaptations in programming and gathering resident information to assist in establishing goals and strategies.
- Incorporates activation fitness and rehabilitative care activities, as prescribed by Home Physician or medical specialists, into individual programs (e.g., walking, stretching, etc.
- Documents residents' interests/needs and progress. Maintains documentation regarding assessment, progress, and involvement of residents in programs.
- Develop and update resident activation goals and strategies on individualized care plans.
- Coordinates activities by obtaining adequate supplies; distributing, and writing information/flyers; collecting funds.
- Accompanies residents on outings, arranging for transportation, tickets/reservations,



ensuring dietary needs can be met. Promotes resident safety.
- Liaises with residents, staff, volunteers, family and community agencies in gathering and providing information to support activity programs.
- Directs Youth Trainees, volunteers and students. Evaluates programs and progress of students.
- Feeds and toilets residents.
- Promotes the residents' integration to their environment.
- Observes and reports changes in residents' physical, mental and/or emotional condition promptly.
- Maintains the resident's dignity when responding to behaviours and managing the associated risks.
- Communicates care needs verbally to team members and the residents.
- Participates in Behavioural Management rounds and care conferences as required.
- Collaborates effectively when interacting with residents, family,



team members and inter-professional care teams.
- Assumes responsibility for personal development through participation in ongoing training to enhance skills.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology or a related discipline or the approved equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of activation, recreation and social programs in a long-term care setting.
- Experience in assessing and evaluating resident needs, as well as establishing appropriate goals and strategies.
You must also have:
- Understanding of the principles of Responsive Behaviour Support Program, person-centered care,



and commitment to establishment of therapeutic relationships with residents and their families.
- Knowledge and skills working with individuals with responsive behaviours associated with dementia, delirium, mental health, or other relevant conditions.
- Knowledge of gerontology and geriatrics, related to long-term care.
- Knowledge in applying a variety of therapeutic techniques related to dementia care including Montessori and dementia ability approaches.
- Knowledge in applying therapeutic modalities of Recreation.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with residents, staff, volunteers and families.
- Ability to work effectively with residents, staff, students, volunteers, family and community agencies.
- Ability to motivate individual residents in order to maximize their participation in meaningful leisure activities.




- Advanced understanding of and ability to apply group dynamic principals.
- Ability to maintain appropriate documentation on residents' progress, care plans, evaluation tools and audits.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply a quality improvement approach in the delivery of recreation services.
- Ability to deliver a high level of Customer Service, Fiscal Accountability, Innovation, Results Orientation and Teamwork.
- Ability to work flexible time schedules including evenings and weekends, depending on programming needs of the Home.
- Ability to utilize a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Word and automated systems (i.e. Point Click Care).
- Ability to promote Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity and respectful workplaces.




- Preference for certification or demonstrated training in Dementia Care, GPA, U-First, Dementiability or Montessori Methods is an asset.

- As a condition of employment with the Long-Term Care Homes & Services Division, selected candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (PRC) with vulnerable sector screening, tuberculosis screening and proof of immunization in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 (O.Reg. 246/22).
