Description
The Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada is hiring an Exhibition Curation Intern through the Young Canada Works program. Under the supervision of the Archivist,
the Intern will plan and design a small exhibition highlighting aspects of ICC history using materials from the ICC Canada Archives collections. This exhibition will be held in Iqaluit, Nunavut, in July 2026, in conjunction with ICC's General Assembly. The Intern will learn how to bring together European/Western museum exhibition theories and practices with modern Inuit culture, while gaining valuable experience working with a small, specialized GLAM collection. They will also learn about the day-to-day workings of a multi-national non-governmental organization, and the challenges and successes of a small cultural heritage repository, by working alongside the ICC Canada staff and through participation in meetings with staff, users, and stakeholders.
The Exhibition Curation Intern will develop a complete exhibition plan for a small exhibition on ICC history. The Intern will document their process and provide procedures for carrying out the exhibition. This will require regular interaction with staff members at ICC Canada who are part of the 2026 General Assembly planning team.
The exhibition will have limited digital content (due to budget and technology constraints) and should consist of a minimum of 25 items from ICC Canada’s collections. The exhibition will be multi-lingual (at least English and Inuktitut, possibly others, depending on budget), thus, the Intern will have to design the exhibition with extra space for additional languages. The exhibition will end with a gathering space for community members to sit with ICC Canada staff at tables with laptop computers to share stories about ICC and identify photographs from our collection. This gathering space will be designed/planned by ICC Canada staff, though the Intern’s advice will be sought.
Specific tasks for the Exhibition Curation Intern include, but are not limited to:
- Create a strong narrative/story on the history of ICC by researching ICC history and the ICC Canada Archives’ collections
- Select archival materials to exhibit to tell the story
- Plan the exhibition space and all necessary displays, including recommendations for lighting features, colour schemes, traffic flow, graphic design, etc.
- Gather cost estimates and source construction of desired displays (including cases, large-scale photographic reproductions, exhibition labels, etc.) Write all exhibition text in English
- Advise the General Assembly team and the ICC Canada Communications Advisor on possible marketing/advertising materials for the exhibition
- Create a step-by-step installation plan for ICC Canada staff to follow
