Position Summary
The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Platform Training Manager to join the Adaptive Oncology team.
The Canadian Bioinformatics Hub (Hub) Platform is a CIHR-funded initiative for 6 years designed to establish a pan-Canadian network of training and community sites in six provincial regions with the aim to increase bioinformatics, computational biology and data science capacity among researchers. Hosted by OICR, Bioinformatics.ca will manage the development of a centralized Hub platform for the coordination of bioinformatics, computational biology and health data science training opportunities.
The Platform Training Manager is responsible for overseeing the training portion of the Hub, which includes overseeing the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops (CBW) run by Bioinformatics.ca.
Position Responsibilities
Training Hub Operational Management
- Trains the Hub’s regional coordinators (located in 6 provinces, reporting to provincial PIs) in how to run CBW training events and how to develop and deliver new workshops
- Trains the Hub’s regional coordinators in conducting needs assessments; coordinates a national summary of needs
- Manages the annual logistics of delivery of the CBW series across Canada through the regional coordinators
- Identifies and onboards new training vendors to the Hub
- Maintains Hub training calendar and training content across all brands and regions; contributes to the Hub’s website development and upgrades as it relates to the training aspects
- Manages the administration and coordination of regional coordinators (e.g. meeting scheduling, agenda setting, task assignment,
knowledge sharing, etc.) as it relates to training, ensuring alignment of regional coordinator activities with the Hub’s training objectives and deliverables
- Develops and implements tools and processes for administrative management of regional training activities (e.g. centralized documentation in Google, SOPs and policies, communication tools, tracking mechanisms, etc.) for use by regional coordinators
- Represents the Hub’s training activities on the Hub’s IDEA and Education Advisory committees; actively contributes to the Hub’s Core Management committee representing training and carrying out tasks related to training
- Develops and oversees a training award process and review committee for Hub training awards based on existing CBW award process
- Supports organizational strategies and initiatives in line with Hub mission and CBW mission
- Collaborates and participates where appropriate in bioinformatics.ca education programs in support of Hub’s education programming, such as Toronto Bioinformatics User Group (TorBUG), etc.
Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops (CBW) Operational Management
- Maintains CBW website/GitHub and brand as the top source for high-quality bioinformatics training materials and workshops in Canada; oversees CBW website redevelopment and upgrades in coordination with Hub website
- Oversees the CBW social media accounts and communications
- Conducts national calls for new workshop proposals, coordinates review of incoming proposals and communicates feedback with proposers
- Coordinates a bi-annual educational board meeting for CBW with key stakeholders from across Canada,
ensuring CBW accountability and educational leadership; compiles and distributes an executive report for each EAB
- Seeks, authors and submits funding applications (alone or in collaboration with regional coordinators) to enhance the activities CBW. Completes accompanying reporting
- Builds and integrates tools to track diversity metrics of CBW trainees into all aspects of CBW; tracks IDEA year over year, and demonstrates improvements against predetermined KPIs for CBW training
- Represents CBW and ensure competitiveness in the Global Organisation for Bioinformatics Learning, Education and Training (GOBLET) and ISCB through participation in committees, working groups, and conferences
- Maintains CBW/bioinformatics.ca standing as ISCB affiliate group by completing required activities and reports
Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in bioinformatics, computational biology,
genomics or computer science, or recognized equivalent
- Experience with academic research environments and grant funding processes (CIHR, Genome Canada and/or NSERC)
- Financial management experience: budget tracking, forecasting and reporting skills
- Programming experience: R/RStudio, GitHub, website content management, different OS (Mac, Windows, Linux)
- Word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software whether cloud or device based
- Excellent English communication skills, written and verbal, both to facilitate effective communications with Bioinformaticsc.ca stakeholders, collaborators and CBW participants
- Highly self-motivated, able to work independently, and work well as a part of a team
- Comfortable with facilitating and hosting training events, delivering presentations and workshops to scientific audiences
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
