The Opportunity
The Economic and Creative Development Department is part of the Infrastructure and Growth Management Division. This department is responsible for the attraction and facilitation of new business investment, and helping employers access the business opportunities of the area. They encourage and promote the creation of new Barrie-based enterprises, including start-ups and small business services.
They also support the retention, growth, and expansion of the City's existing businesses. This includes bringing stakeholders together on strategic programs.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Manager of Business Development, the Data Collection Assistant conducts the Business & Employer Data Survey across the employment and commercial areas of the City of Barrie. The majority of the time will be spent working outdoors conducting door-to-door interviews with employers throughout the City, collecting survey data using an electronic device and a GIS-based application. Accuracy in data completion is essential and the role includes proactively monitoring and following up on missing information to ensure data integrity. Overall, this position plays an integral role in tracking employment growth and monitoring economic trends within the City of Barrie. This survey is one of the most comprehensive surveys of its kind and will be used to guide regional and local policy formulation through trend analysis relating to business and employment.
The survey results also provide the community with an online business directory that can be used to gather valuable insights into Barrie’s economic landscape.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University*
- Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
Experience
- Three (3) months of full-time experience performing duties related to the above-mentioned major responsibilities
- Customer service experience required
- Knowledge/experience in conducting surveys
- Knowledge of Statistics Canada NAICS codes
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Demonstrated Ability to:
- Maintain a high standard of public relations and professionalism at all times when communicating with business owners and staff, eliciting information and responding to inquiries and complaints
- Work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment
- Achieve thoroughness and accuracy when collecting survey data
- Interpret and apply Statistics Canada’s North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes
- Basic troubleshooting of computer and software applications
- Time management
- Basic skills include: Active Listening; Attention to Detail; Customer Service; Interpersonal; Initiative; Multitasking; Problem Solving; Professionalism; Teamwork; Time Management; Written Communication
- Intermediate computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word), as well as familiarity using tablet devices
- Availability to accommodate deadlines or peak period workloads that may extend beyond designated normal workday hours or normal hours per week
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing with a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
- Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
Other Important Information
Work Term: May - August (4 Months)
Location: City Hall, 70 Collier Street, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week
Wage: $17.75 to $22.98 per hour
