ESL (English as a Second Language) Instructor Job Description Job Summary: An ESL Instructor is responsible for teaching English language skills to non-native speakers, helping them improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. The instructor develops lesson plans, assesses student progress, and fosters a supportive learning environment tailored to diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities: Teaching & Curriculum Development: Design and deliver engaging ESL lessons based on student needs and proficiency levels. Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments. Integrate technology and multimedia tools to enhance learning. Utilize various teaching methods (e.g.,
communicative approach, task-based learning). Provide instruction in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversation skills. Teach academic and workplace English for professional and educational advancement. Student Assessment & Support: Assess student language proficiency using standardized tests and classroom evaluations. Provide feedback and individualized support to help students improve. Monitor student progress and adapt teaching strategies accordingly. Offer extra tutoring or workshops as needed. Classroom Management & Engagement: Create an inclusive and respectful learning environment. Encourage student participation and confidence in speaking English. Address diverse learning needs and cultural sensitivities. Maintain discipline and foster positive interactions in the classroom. Administrative & Professional Duties: Keep accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional development. Stay updated on ESL teaching methodologies and best practices. Communicate with school administration, parents,
and support services as needed. Qualifications & Skills: Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Linguistics, or a related field. TESL, TEFL, or CELTA certification required (or equivalent). Previous experience teaching ESL/EFL preferred (online or in-person). Skills & Competencies: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Cultural awareness and sensitivity. Ability to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles. Proficiency in lesson planning and classroom management. Experience with online teaching platforms (if applicable). Work Environment & Schedule: May work in schools, language institutes, colleges, or community programs. Flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on student needs. Teach grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversational skills. Utilize various teaching methods (e.g., communicative approach, immersive learning). Integrate technology, multimedia resources, and real-life language applications in lessons. Prepare students for DELF, DALF, TEF, or other French proficiency exams (if applicable). Student Assessment & Support: Assess student language proficiency using standardized and in-class evaluations. Provide constructive feedback and individualized learning support. Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles. Offer extra help sessions or tutoring if needed. Classroom Management & Engagement: Foster an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment. Encourage student participation and confidence in speaking French.
Maintain discipline and establish a positive classroom atmosphere. Incorporate French culture, history, and traditions into lessons. Administrative & Professional Duties: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and evaluations. Communicate with school administration, parents, and support services as needed. Participate in teacher training programs and professional development. Stay updated on modern teaching methodologies and curriculum changes. Qualifications & Skills: Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in French, Education, Linguistics, or a related field. Teaching certification such as B.Ed., TESL (for French as a second language), or FLE (Français Langue Étrangère) is preferred. Previous teaching experience in schools, colleges, or private institutions is an asset. Skills & Competencies: Fluency in French (native or near-native proficiency).
