POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Strategic PMO will be responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and management of strategic projects and programs that support HEB’s goals. This leader will manage a portfolio of several multi-million dollar strategic initiatives and several “Business-as-Usual” (BAU) projects. They will own the initiative portfolio management process, ensuring that projects are prioritized and aligned with strategic business objectives. Additionally, the Director will drive the annual and quarterly planning cycles, oversee project governance, and ensure overall success across a diverse portfolio of initiatives. This position requires strategic thinking, project management expertise, leadership, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE
Key Accountabilities
PMO Leadership & Strategy:
- Lead and evolve the PMO to ensure alignment with business strategy and the successful delivery of complex, high-priority projects.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive initiative portfolio that includes multi-million dollar strategic programs and BAU projects, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
- Establish and drive the annual and quarterly planning cycles, collaborating with executive leadership to ensure project portfolios align with strategic business priorities.
- Define, implement, and continuously improve PMO processes, standards, and methodologies for project management across the organization.
Initiative Portfolio Management:
- Oversee the initiative portfolio management process, ensuring clear visibility and tracking of both strategic programs and BAU projects.
- Work with cross-functional teams to identify resource needs, manage capacity, and ensure that key initiatives and operational projects are appropriately prioritized and executed.
- Monitor and manage the health of the portfolio, addressing risks, dependencies,
and challenges across projects and programs.
Multi-million Dollar Program Management:
- Lead the management and execution of multiple large-scale programs, each with multi-million dollar budgets, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, timely delivery, and within-budget performance.
- Oversee program governance, including financial tracking, stakeholder communications, and the successful management of resources across programs.
- Identify, manage, and mitigate risks at the program level, ensuring that issues are escalated and resolved promptly.
Annual & Quarterly Planning:
- Lead the creation and management of the company’s annual project roadmap, aligning strategic initiatives and BAU projects with organizational goals and financial forecasts.
- Facilitate quarterly planning sessions with senior leadership and department heads to assess progress, adjust priorities, and allocate resources to critical initiatives and operational needs.
- Ensure that the project portfolio remains agile, adjusting to changes in business needs, market conditions, or other external factors.
Project Management Excellence:
- Oversee the execution of both strategic and BAU projects, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget while meeting established quality standards.
- Implement project tracking systems and KPIs to monitor project performance, reporting on key milestones, risks, and outcomes to stakeholders.
- Drive continuous improvement in project management capabilities across the organization.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with senior leadership, department heads, and external partners to ensure projects align with business needs and strategies.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure timely communication, project buy-in, and alignment.
Team Development:
- Lead and mentor a team of project managers and PMO staff to develop their skills, performance, and career growth.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the PMO and across project teams.
Governance and Risk Management:
- Ensure robust governance processes are in place, providing regular updates to leadership on project and program progress, risks, and opportunities.
- Proactively identify and mitigate risks across the initiative portfolio, ensuring that challenges are addressed early and effectively.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field
- PMP, PgMP, or other relevant project management certifications.
- 10+ years of experience in project management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within a PMO.
- Proven experience managing multi-million dollar programs and portfolios, with a focus on both strategic and operational projects.
- Strong experience in initiative portfolio management, annual/quarterly planning, and aligning projects with business priorities.
- Solid understanding of project management methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Hybrid).
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence senior executives and manage cross-functional teams.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and managing financial performance across large programs.
- Strong business acumen and a track record of delivering results that drive business growth and performance.
- Experience in building and scaling a PMO function is a plus
- Experience in financial services considered an asset
