GENERAL SUMMARYThe Youth Development and Program Specialist (YDPS), Camp Smitty and Outdoor Education contributes to the delivery of exceptional outdoor education programming at Camp Smitty and provides administrative and kitchen support to camps and rentals. The Youth Development and Program Specialist (YDPS), Camp Smitty and Outdoor Education assists in camp and rental initiatives of Camp Smitty, supporting the Camp Manager in all aspects of rental and program delivery. This position carries responsibilities of assisting in the planning and implementing of BGC Ottawa outdoor education initiatives at Camp Smitty. The Youth Development and Program Specialist (YDPS),



Camp Smitty and Outdoor Education will be flexible in their tasks and determine how best to support Camp Smitty and the Camp Manager in the delivery of exceptional camp programs and rental initiatives.
Major Responsibility 1: Provide leadership in Outdoor Education in conjunction with the Camp Manager and provide administrative and kitchen support to camps and rentals
Activities:

- Support the development and delivery of Outdoor Education programming to members which are in line with BGC Ottawa’s Camp Smitty initiatives.
- Be a positive role model for youth workers, volunteers and youth
- Act as on-site contact when required
- Support and promote teamwork at Camp Smitty
- Report any concerns regarding staff to manager, Communicate relevant information to manager
- Supervise staff appropriately throughout programming
- Support administrative functions necessary for camp and rental delivery
- Support kitchen duties as required




- Any other duties as required by the BGCO Manager

Major Responsibility 2: Assist in rental initiatives and Community Development
Activities:

- Work positively in partnership with other agencies and renters
- Assist Camp Manager in rental initiatives and program and kitchen duties
- Perform public relations and promotion of Camp Smitty as required
- Community Outreach

Major Responsibility 3: Assist in the development and implementation of systems to monitor and evaluate Camp programs Activities:

- Positively engage with young people at Camp Smitty especially during the overnight summer camp
- Identify gaps in service and work with the Manager and other colleagues to address these gaps
- Promote and oversee BGC Ottawa guidelines and policies including confidentiality, child protection & equal opportunities




- Actively encourage young people to participate in programs offered
- Provide feedback to staff and volunteers regarding their performance in programming

Major Responsibility 4: Training Activities:
Activities:

- Responsible for upkeep of professional skills and development
- Attend BGC Ottawa staff meetings and planning sessions as required
- Assist in the co-ordination and development of the ‘in house’ training of Camp staff
- Align programming with BGCO strategic direction

Major Responsibility 5: Administrative duties Activities:
Activities:

- Perform administrative record keeping and reporting as required
- Manage budgets in conjunction with manager
- Complete monthly reports
- Maintain updated database
- Submit People and Culture and financial forms in a timely manner

Perform other related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONSDemonstrated Skills and Abilities:





- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Ability to build constructive relationships with children and youth in groups and on an individual basis
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Effective communication skills including report writing and presentations
- Knowledge of issues that affect children and youth
- Knowledge of various aspects of child development and outdoor education
- Experience of working with marginalized/’hard to reach’ youth
- Experience of planning and developing child and youth programs
- Ability to monitor and evaluate a wide range of interventions with children and youth
- Knowledge of child protection act
- Knowledge of anti-discriminatory practice
- Experience of managing and supervising part-time staff and volunteers
- Proficient in using IT including email and Microsoft Word




- Experience of multi-agency working suggestion: experience in community development approaches
- Multilingualism is an asset

Required Education, Training and Experience

- Completed degree or diploma in a child and youth or outdoor education or related studies
- 3-5 years’ experience working with children and youth
- Recognized certification in first aid
- HIGH FIVE certificate is an asset
