Executive Director of Enterprise Data Governance for Alberta Health Services.
This leadership position is essential for establishing and enforcing data governance policies, frameworks, and best practices that align with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. By overseeing data quality, data documentation, security, privacy, and compliance, the role safeguards the integrity and usability of data while enabling data-driven decision-making. By integrating project and change management principles, the ED ensures the smooth adoption of governance initiatives, promoting alignment with organization objectives and regulatory requirements. This leader collaborates with stakeholders across AHS to foster a culture of data stewardship,
providing clear documentation and comprehensive education to support data governance efforts and championing initiatives that enhance data quality while addressing issues related to privacy, security, and access control. Additionally, the role involves overseeing compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks, managing risks associated with data usage, and ensuring the organization is equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to maintain data integrity and drive informed decision-making. AHS relies on accurate, secure, and accessible data to make informed decisions, enhance operational processes, and maintain compliance with industry regulations. The Executive Director of Enterprise Data Governance plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of AHS's data assets, promoting a culture of data stewardship, and ensuring that data is leveraged strategically to support the organization's overall mission and objectives.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Information Management, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related discipline is required.
Substantial experience (preferably 10+ years) in data governance, privacy and compliance, data management, or related fields. Proven leadership experience in progressively responsible roles, preferably in data governance or a related area. Experience working in complex organizations with diverse data sources and business units. Experience building a team and mentoring junior and intermediate-level developers, database administrators and/or data scientists. Mastery of the English language, spoken and written. A demonstrated pattern of professional and personal development. Knowledge of data governance principles, best practices, and frameworks. Experience developing and implementing enterprise-wide data governance strategies and frameworks. Familiarity with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
and a proven track record of ensuring organizational compliance. Strong leadership and managerial skills, including the ability to inspire and lead cross-functional teams. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex data governance concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to align data governance initiatives with overall business strategy and objectives. Experience in driving cultural change and promoting a data-centric culture within an organization. Familiarity with data management tools, metadata management systems, and other technologies relevant to data governance.
Relevant certifications in data governance, data management, or related areas are often preferred (e.g.,
Certified Information Management Professional - CIMP, Certified Data Management Professional - CDMP). A master's degree or higher (e.g., MBA, MSc) is preferred, notably in a field related to data management, analytics, or business.
